The Drum Tree, by Catherine V. Wolf, is a marvelous journey that will keep you guessing. The characters seem alive and I had a difficult time tearing myself away from this book to deal with the real world. It's a coming of age story and a tale that deals with ecology in a fantastically creative way. The mysterious dark forest that everyone is afraid of is penetrated by one who has no fear of it. His quest and the relationships he establishes along the way make this a highly thoughtful and entertaining read.
The first in a series of three books, The Drum Tree made me anticipate the next installment which is being written as you read this.
