Lynne Podrat

Award-winning author Lynne Podrat graduated from Pennsylvania State University and then spent fifteen years in the Fashion Industry as an Assistant Buyer and Department Manager with Bloomingdales Department Store before returning to school to receive her educational degrees from Arcadia University and Gynedd Mercy. A retired educator and Administrator from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania School District, she taught English, literature, composition, and history in elementary and secondary schools. She has secretly been a writer and poet her whole life but has only recently chosen to share those talents with the world, receiving Gold from the Nonfiction Authors Association, Gold from TAZ, The Author Zone, Silver from Global Book Awards for her memoir, and now First Place from The BookFest awards for her memoir, Listen to Me: How My Down Syndrome Brother Saved My Life and Gold from Literary Titans, Winner of Children’s Fiction Soft Cover from International Book Awards for 2023, for her children’s book, My Sister Wants an Elephant. Lynne now lives with her husband in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, spending winters dragon boating where her heart races and summers hiking the Rockies in Vail, Colorado where her heart sings.

  • What inspired you to start writing?
    I had always written poetry and synopses, opinion letters of articles when inspired by the topic. This was different. My baby brother was born with Down syndrome; his birth had a dramatic effect on my family, with me spending my life ensuring his inclusion. We had moved from Vorhees, NJ, to Florida for our grandchildren, leaving Bruce in Philadelphia. Family visiting up north, not having us there, were no longer visiting with my brother. Now, diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer, 4 months to live, our story needed to be shared. My final guarantee of his memory never being forgotten.
  • Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
    My Sister Wants an Elephant, my second book, was so well-received by parents and my grandchildren that I decided to write another children's book with my grandchildren. Most of the story is complete, just waiting for them and edits
