About the Book

Hello, my name is Robert Barr, and I would like to recommend my book “One Such As I-An Unlikely Candidate”, which is available in paperback. It is also available in E-book under “An Unlikely Choice”. It is the story of how God took a poor crippled boy like me and built a world-wide ministry. I had Polio at the age of two and was paralyzed from the waist down. They said I would never walk again. I had massive medical bills, so our family was very poor. I was constantly bullied in school and could not concentrate on school. I got very little schooling and was constantly told I would never amount to anything. I didn’t know God at that time, but He knew me. Find out how God used an unlikely nurse to help me walk again. Though I could walk, I was still failing in school. Find out how God raised up two unlikely teachers, one near retirement and the other just out of school and how each used their unique gifts to help me see beyond my disability to greater possibilities. I began to work hard to catch up in school, but I was trying in my own strength and failing. In High School all hope seemed lost. Find out how God raised up a group of Christian students to lead me to God who turned my life around. He called me out of the darkness into the light and then called me to return to those still in darkness and show them the light. I was told that to become a pastor, I would have to go to college, so I set out to go. Those around me told me not to take the college prep classes because I was failing in the general courses and could not possibly pass the advanced courses. The Bible said I could do all things through Christ, so I signed up anyway. I did graduate from high school and went on to get a college degree in Sociology. I ran out of money and there were no churches available so I could not complete seminary. It seemed like I was blocked at every turn. I became a Social Worker and worked to pay off my college loans. My wife and I moved into a travel trailer, and I began ministering to those in the trailer park around us. I was ordained by a mission organization to carry on the ministry in the trailer parks, but it was not accepted by the denomination to pastor a church. Churches began contacting me to help them develop ministries and Neighborhood Ministries was born. I was later able to return to seminary and pastored several churches. Upon graduation, I found that the church leaders no longer believed in the Bible and were trying to get rid of the pastors who still believed that Christ died for our sins. That church was closed to me, but God provided another one and I was assigned to train a pastor who was struggling. The church could not afford to pay the pastor and so could not afford to pay me, so I went back to Social Work while continuing to train pastors. I later began writing booklets to instruct Christians in the faith and was asked to teach at State and national conferences for church workers and Social Workers. I was also asked to teach classes in nearby colleges. I have continued to seek the lost and train believers from a wide range of denominations. It wasn’t through any great ability I had. The book shows how God prepared me for the ministry and guided me through it all. It also shows how God opened new doors when the old doors closed. God continued to sustain me and my wife as He laid the foundation for my present ministry which is far greater than any I could have imagined. Along the way, I have been encouraged by reading the stories of the struggles of those who served God before me and how they were able to overcome through the power of God. I hope that this book will do the same for you. If God can use someone like me, He certainly can use you if you let Him.
