When I first came up with the idea of The Children of Raven’s Reach, it seemed as if fantasy was the genre most fitting. Fantasy always carries with it some kind of magic, so I did a little research to find out about magic and how it works.
My first dive was into Black Magic, also known as The Dark Arts. I found a few books on the subject at a college library and found some writings online as well. The term, “Dark Arts,” fits this kind of magic perfectly. Demons are summoned and their power is used to accomplish the sorcerer’s purposes. There were herbs and incantations as well as sacrifices and sexual intercourse involved in many of these methods of calling up a demon.
Though this was the premier way of practicing magic, I wasn’t sure I wanted my main character to be involved in such unseemly behavior. It seemed too dirty. There was too much evil wrapped up in it. In the end, I decided my character would give it a whirl and discover the evil and the danger to himself that was inherent in practicing the Dark Arts.
Magic was still needed to make the story go. Where could I turn for another, more positive form of magic? Stock magic that didn’t deal with demons had to do with wishes, magic words and wands, the sort of magic you might find Harry Potter using. That was unsatisfactory to me. I wanted something more based in reality, something with some meat on the bone.
My training with the Jose Silva Mind Control classes I took years ago started me thinking about magic and the possibility of linking it with the mind. At this time I read a piece about Nikola Tesla and how he could transfer energy through the ether. That information mixed with a video I saw soon after reading about Tesla where a scientist theorized that the Universe is all waves of energy. There it was, right in front of me, all the ingredients needed. A new magic was born. These ideas were poured into my head, stirred gently, then shaped and honed into a believable system. What emerged is the magic of The Children of Raven’s Reach.
