About the Book

A chance encounter on an airplane during a snowstorm introduces Amy Moran to a handsome man whose family is wealthy. Amy, on the other hand, comes from a lower middle-class family. She's stranded in Kansas City on her way to her best friend's wedding in Hawaii--an event she's saved up just enough money so that she can attend. She'll have to sleep in the airport until flights resume. He tells her that he'll take her to his house because it's enormous.

Then she meets Mrs. Emerson, his mother--haughty, stuck-up, patronizing. Even her own children call her "Mother." Amy has no idea how to act around this woman. Every move she makes invites criticism. Mrs. Emerson thinks Amy's a gold digger and wants no part of her. She also dislikes Amy because she's a bit on the chubby side.

Amy is a secretary at MIT and is finished college at night. She's a hard worker, just like her mother and father. None of this impresses Mrs. Emerson.

As the romance develops, so does Mrs. Emerson's disdain.
