Inside the Mind - Terrilyn Alexander

  • Q: What inspired you to start writing?
My mother inspired me to write at a very young age. She would sit and read to my siblings and me, telling us stories about her life growing up. I loved those stories. My mother shared so much with us that I began writing and telling my own stories during our family nights when I was about nine years old.
  • Q: Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My lates book is a fanciful story about a boy who wants to become a dolphin. When children read my book they will experience an exciting adventure reading about what it's like to be a dolphin.
  • Q: How do you create your characters?
I create my chracters through various avenues. For example, I find inspiration in my family, friends, my children's toys, and even strangers I pass by. For me, creativity is woven into my everyday life.
  • Q: What does your typical writing day look like?
In my typical writing day, I balance my creative writing with my personal life. I prioritize my writing based on my family's schedule. I then do morning word counts, editing and polishing, and plotting and brainstorming. Next comes Marketing, ads, and reader engagement.
  • Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
The most rewarding part of being and indie author is complete and professional autonomy. Unlike traditionally published authors, indie authors have the ultimate say over every single aspect of their work and business.
  • Q: What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
The biggest challenge I face on my writing journey is balancing creative output with emotional and administrative hurdles.
  • Q: Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
For writing I use tools such as Scriver. It's a binder system to drag, drop, and rearrange scenes or chapters at my descretion. I also use Google Docs, which is the best free, cloud-based platform for simple drafting, real-time collaboration with beta readers, and seamless editing feedback.
  • Q: What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
    Always write from the heart.
  • Q: How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
Here are some of the tools I use for my book's promotion. Family and friends, social media spaces, author websites, reader magnets, and value-first content, where I share behind-the scenes writing journeys, and favorite book reccomendations.
  • Q: What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I'm actually working on the sequel to my children's book, I Want To Be A Dolphin. I've written the story, and now I'm in the publishing stages. Stay tuned! It's so exciting!!
