Inside the Mind - Ruth Gowan

  • Q: What inspired you to start writing?
I was living in an outport in Newfoundland at the time and I couldn't find anything to read. So I started writing. However after submitting it to a couple of publishers and getting scathing reply only one encouraged me so basically I gave up and dumped the manuscript in a box. Meanwhile i lived and worked in other countries inc; the Middle East. 20 years later unpacking yet another box back in Ireland. I found the manuscript and notes and decided to rewrite this time using my computer. Well the story just took off and I wrote and wrote and this was the first. It was published first but re-edited and what you have here is the final one with a new cover. I also am changing the Series to reflect what I write: Speed & Romance, Betrayal & Drama, Adventure & Travel, Rivalry & Competition.
  • Q: Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Tailspin is the latest book: in the Series. * An arrogant ex-F1 Champion driver moves to be a World Rally Championship competitor. Despite his rocky past and multiple crashes with inadequate co-drivers. His agenda is to win the Monte Carlo, hiding his true identity. Her agenda is to rise in the ranks as a top co-driver. But she is partnered with him. Unseen danger threatens. the partners —But attempts on both their lives, plus kidnappings create tension & a bond.  But a future together is not on the cards, feelings never declared * HEA even possible?
  • Q: How do you create your characters?
They evolve as I write mainly. Usually I will create a character file of the main two protagonists, and fill in the others as i progress.
  • Q: What does your typical writing day look like?
Random. until recently I was running a business but since I retired. I have been spending most of my time attempting to get my 9 book seen by the right readers and rebranding. This leaves me only a little time to write, but i have an alarm once a day reminding me to write for at least an hour. Each day except when there are rugby matches on. Sorry, I am a bit fan.
  • Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Seeing my books and holding my print titles
  • Q: What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
I have dyslexia. Therefor it makes the editing much difficult for me before i submit it to be edited
  • Q: Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
I use Scrivener have done for years.
  • Q: What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
I don't know really except talk, read, speak to other authors
  • Q: How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
With difficulty. I use all the help i can get with a non-existent budget.
  • Q: What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
Yes. Involving some cross over characters from earlier books and lots of drama and of course Car Rallying and this time putting Rugby into the mix
