Inside the Mind - Doreen Pullo-Fleisch

  • Q: What inspired you to start writing?
I was inspired to write children's picture books after the COVID pandemic and the death of my parents. I needed to do something positive that would make me feel better about myself. Also , as a virtual children's instructor I wanted to share my books with children that are struggling and learning delayed.
  • Q: Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
"The Underground Hounds" was my last children's book. It is a story about 2 dogs that take a train ride journey to find a ball in a London store. This book is a fun rhyming story!
  • Q: How do you create your characters?
My animal characters were created from having a pet dog. Dogs are very relatable to children. Young children are happy to read books that include animals.
  • Q: What does your typical writing day look like?
I usually write ideas down on paper first. Next I use the WordPerfect App to type the story. I contact my illustrator with ideas to draw the pictures for the story. I also use an editor to check my writing.
  • Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
The most rewarding part of being an indie author is having the freedom to share my stories and connect with young readers. I also enjoy seeing children get entertained and inspired by my books.
  • Q: What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
It is always challenging to deal with the feedback that you get from readers. An author's book may be accepted or rejected by readers.
  • Q: Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
I use WordPerfect to type my stories.
  • Q: What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
Always practice writing and reading to improve your craft. Believe in yourself and never give up!
  • Q: How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
I use Facebook, and Instagram to promote my books. I have also done book signings at local Barnes & Noble store.
  • Q: What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
Yes! "Crumb Cake, Crumb Cake " is my next children's rhyming book. It will be ready sometime this year.
