Q: What inspired you to start writing?
I fell in love with the idea of telling stories as a kid. I would reenact cartoons and TV shows I enjoyed. Then, I discovered comic books and I was hooked. I started writing and drawing my own comics then later tried my hand at short stories then novels. I still love the creative process. It's fun.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is NOWEHERE TO RUN - A Deputy U.S. Marshall William Teague Survival Thriller. This is the first starring novel for Deputy Teague, who appeared as a secondary in a couple of my other novels. Teague helps capture a dangerous hijacker. The FBI taskforce puts him on a plane. Bad idea. The plane crashes on top of a mountain. Teague and a mysterious local guide head up the mountain in search of survivors. Time is running out as temperatures continue to drop and a massive storm is bearing down on them. If they can't rescue the survivors in time, they'll be forced to weather the storm on top of the mountain where the odds of survival are zero.
Nowhere To Run is currently having a launch event on Kickstarter that ends July 20th. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bobbynash/nowhere-to-run-0

Q: How do you create your characters?
I get to know them by treating them like real people instead of characters. To me, they have distinct voices and their own temperament and attitude. Once I get to know them, they inform me of what they will and will not do and how they get from plot point to plot point. I discover facts about the characters as the story unfolds. They reveal details along the way. Trusting my characters has led me to some wonderful character moments as well as twists & turns.

Q: What does your typical writing day look like?
I start with admin work. Answering emails, updating my websites and social media, setting up events, that sort of thing. Then, I dive in and start writing. After, I do a little more admin and maybe do some night writing as well. I also handle art duties in the evenings. It's a full day.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of being an indie author?
Meeting people who have read my books is always a thrill. I love doing events. I do a number of conventions, literary events, and the like throughout the year. They are so much fun and I love doing them. Writing is such a quite, solitary job. Any chance I get to interact with people is a nice break. I love meeting readers.

Q: What’s one challenge you’ve faced in your writing journey?
The first challenge was "Can I do this? Can I write a novel?" finishing that first book, as amateurish as it was, emboldened me to try again. My second novel was the first I sold and it opened the door to more work. There are always challenges. How do I get my books in front of readers is another biggie.

Q: Do you have any favorite writing tools or apps?
Not really. I'm a pretty simple guy. I use Word to write. I have an old, way out of date art program that suites my purposes. I have a free note app on my phone and tablet I can write on when I'm out of the office. I don't really need anything fancy.

Q: What advice would you give to new or aspiring indie authors?
First off, have fun. Writing should be fun. Second, decide what you want out of your writing and make a plan that leads to that goal. Not everyone's end goal is the same. Some write as a hobby. Some write part-time. Some do it full-time. Some are shooting for New York Times Bestseller status. Others want a Hollywood adaptation. Determine where you want writing to take you and set attainable goals that get your there.
For me, goal one was finishing the first draft. Goal two was finishing the second draft. Then polishing. Then edits. Then submitting to publishers. Each goal led to the next.

Q: How do you handle book promotion as an indie author?
I do all sorts of promotion. In addition to keeping my websites up to date and using social media, I also maintain a free monthly newsletter ( you can sign up here: https://js4zbn.subscribepage.io ), guest on podcasts and radio shows, set up at cons, bookstores, libraries, bars, markets, fairs, and more, teach classes on writing and art, and generally make myself available. Some of the best promotion for me comes from in person events where I can speak one-on-one with potential readers. It's all about being present, friendly, approachable, and personable. I'm proud of my work so talking about it is fun for me.

Q: What’s next for you? Are you working on a new book?
I am always working on a few books at any given time. I have a few books with various publishers in stages of production. I'm currently writing 2 novels, 1 novella, and two short stories, plus co-writing two novels with writer friends. Beyond that, I have other projects in the planning ad research phase. Plus, I'm actively promoting the Nowhere To Run Kickstarter and upcoming wide release. Whew.
