If you are an independent author or creator running yourself ragged across half a dozen social media platforms, I have a confession to make.
For a long time, the prevailing narrative—pushed by tech companies, marketing gurus, and now, even AI assistants—has been a simple, exhausting formula: Work harder. Post consistently. Pivot to video. Master the algorithm, blah, blah, blah!
The implication is always that if your content isn't being seen, you just haven't found the right strategy yet.
Well, I’m afraid it is time to stop gaslighting creators. It is time to talk about the brutal, unvarnished truth of today's exhausting digital landscape.
The game is rigged. And the algorithms are intentionally burying our work.
The Myth of the Level Playing Field
When social media platforms first emerged, they felt like a revolution for independent artists. For the first time, a solo author based in a northern town like mine, Huddersfield, could theoretically reach a global audience without needing a traditional gatekeeper. I have been fortunate to reach bestseller status in Amazon categories, but not outside of Amazon.
Today, that doorway has been firmly shut.
The algorithms that dictate what people see are no longer designed to surface raw talent or original voices. They are designed to maximise platform retention and ad revenue. This has created a "winner-take-all" architecture that systematically favours the lead players—the massive corporate brands, the legacy publishing houses, and the creators who already possess millions of followers.
When a system automatically amplifies what is already viral, it creates a closed echo chamber. The big get bigger, while talented, independent creators who pour hours of genuine human labour into their craft are left shouting into a digital void.
Why the System Is Designed to Fail Us
If you feel like you are doing everything "right" and seeing zero return, it is not a reflection of your talent, your worth, or your work ethic. It is the natural consequence of a broken framework:
The Pay-to-Play Reality: Social media platforms are no longer discovery networks; they are advertising companies. They deliberately strangle organic reach because they want to force you to buy ads. If you don't pay the house, the house hides your content.
The Scale Imbalance: A solo creator cannot compete with corporate marketing budgets or full-time media teams running automated content loops. Expecting a single human being to write books, research history, and manage six different active digital storefronts without burning out is an impossible standard.
The Content Treadmill: Algorithms demand endless volume. The moment you stop feeding the machine to actually focus on your creative work—like writing the next chapter of a mystery—the platform punishes your visibility.
Moving Past the Corporate Script
Continuing to pretend that a new checklist, a new mood board, a different hashtag, or a trendier video format will suddenly fix this systemic unfairness is an insult to your intelligence. It shifts the blame onto your effort rather than pointing at a rigged system.
Acknowledging this harsh reality isn't about admitting defeat; it is about reclaiming your sanity. It is about recognising that your exhaustion is completely justified.
So my message to the writers, artists, and independent creators fighting this silent, uphill battle every single day: your frustration is real and valid. The machine is working against you. However, please remember that the value of your voice, your history, and your stories exists entirely outside of a line of code that was programmed to ignore you. I truly wish my message could be upbeat, reassuring, and optimistic.
